Law Personal Statement 法律專業個人陳述
"Rule or body of rules established in a community and enjoining or prohibiting certain actions"
In my opinion, this definition of Law could not be any clearer
However, many people still see the need to ignore these rules; whether they are committing crime by breaking the law or behaving in a deviant manner
As a child, looking up to law-enforcers such as police officers has made me believe that Law is the backbone of our society. Without it, everyday life would not be tolerable. Over centuries, Law has matured and has come to a stage where it provides and reinforces the greatest security and protection it possibly can
Although I do not study Law as one of my 3 'A' Level subjects, I thoroughly enjoy reading and conversing about its place in society
During one module of my A Level Business Studies course, Business Law was a main topic of study. I found working on this particular subject very appealing and saw myself taking it up as a career. Since then I have been engaged in researching about a Law degree and know that I would find it very enjoyable
Having relatives working in Law-related fields, I have looked up to them as providers of justice. I see the excitement and satisfaction they get from their careers and wish to pursue a similar profession myself
Many friends and family told me when I was young that I would make a good lawyer or solicitor. My persuasive yet firm approach in debate has made me believe this and now I want to use this ability professionally and follow a pathway that will allow me to do so
While having no direct legal work experience, I consider myself to have the qualities and skills needed for any demanding post offered in such field. Working for The Halifax Plc has matured me a great deal, not only in terms of my communication skills but also as a team worker as well as an independent employee working towards deadlines
Working in the banking hall and at the Customer Services desk, I was faced with queries customers had regarding their own accounts or other services we [Halifax Plc] could offer. Dealing with many age groups and backgrounds required considerable diplomacy and expertise, and I felt confident in presenting myself in this professional manner. Many times, when talking about opening new accounts or applying for mortgages, I was able to explain the legal implications to new customers
As well as being a friendly, humorous and positive team member, I was recognized for my high computer literacy skills acquired studying computer science at 'A' Level
Being a trained member of a Sixth Form anti-bullying programme called 'Connect', I have had many responsibilities dealing with Year 7 at my school. This included organising and planning sessions with a group of children, talking about bullying and answering any questions they may have. The programme also included counselling and helping with homework
In the process I learnt to talk about complex topics in an appropriate manner and language for younger children so that they fully understood what was being said
I also played a key role in the making of our school Yearbook, putting together a list of 'Awards' for students within my year group
My extra mural interests include travelling and meeting new people. I have visited Singapore, Malaysia, India, the Far and Middle East, the Czech Republic and many places in Europe, sometimes for educational purposes and on other occasions for leisure. The different cultures and traditions I saw intrigued me as I learnt many new ways of life, some of which I had not known of before
In addition, a thoroughly enjoy reading mystery and crime novels by John Grisham
Within the last few years, my interests have multiplied. I have competed in a 25-mile cycling tour around London in aid of Leukaemia research which I found rewarding
At home I take pleasure from using the Internet for work and play
One of my greatest successes has been a business venture, which involved organising social events locally as alternatives to nightclubs in Central London. The idea arose when myself and a group of friends were unable to visit a 'proper' nightclub and so we decided to do something to resolve this. Since then our monthly meetings have become very popular. I feel what we are doing provides a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for 17-18 year olds
I also reached fifth Dan in Tae Kwon Doe and value my skills in this
In addition to regularly visiting my local gym in order to keep in shape I enjoy swimming, football and cricket
To conclude, I feel I have the necessary qualities to cope with life at university and living away from home. I have frequently been away, camping or travelling, and feel quite self-sufficient
Therefore, I plead guilty in wanting to study Law at your university and believe I will be a suitable candidate for the course.
