As a young girl, I read Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, in which the book’s hero, lawyer Atticus Finch, honourably defends the life of an innocent man who is unjustly targeted by his neighbours.Since then, I have been attracted to the legal profession by its core essence: ensuring the truth is heard and that decency is defended. As the time has come to decide upon a course of study, Law is truly the way forward for me.
Educating myself about the intricacies of the European legal system and how this system has affected the interpretation and development of international law will lead me on the path to successfully navigating the sophisticated legal landscape of foreign policy and security issues, which represent topics that will be of the utmost importance in the twenty-first century.
In order to look to the importance of issues in the future, one must have a clear perspective of what has come before us. I am a proficient student of history, which I think provides me with a significant advantage. I have always been interested in the historical perspective and believe this has influenced my choice to pursue law as a career. I am fascinated by the staying power of some of the ancient statutes that have remained virtually unchanged, such as laws based on ancient Greece or Rome, or those taken from the Bible or the Torah. Their permanence illustrates the innate and fundamental nature of rules in society.
In addition to possessing knowledge of the past, those who practise law must also be a part of reshaping the legal system when necessary. As a part of my school social studies class, I spent time in a court of law listening to a burglary case, and I noticed how barristers for both sides frequently cited previous cases. Those cases, and the lawyers who had tried them, formed the basis for current standards of behaviour in the courtroom. This experience showed me first hand the essential role of the barrister in determining the form that laws take.
Witnessing the barrister in action, I believe that role, more so than that of a solicitor, suits me better. I am an analytical thinker and a confident my abilities to help others.
I am also a confident debate speaker, skills I nurtured while serving as captain of my debate team. I am most interested in applying these skills to family law.
I cannot imagine a more noble cause than that of children, and family law seeks to speak for those children who have been rendered voiceless because of fear resulting from abuse or neglect in their home.
Regardless of my ultimate career destination, I feel that I have the passion and dedication to represent the rights of others on a local, national or international stage. I will pursue areas of study that will help me steer the legal system; I wish to specialise in family law and corporate law in my final year.
Ultimately, I will be learning about the nature of law more so than the memorised statutes; its practical purpose, ultimate goals, application, and of course, how to argue its merits are essential to practising
law successfully. I believe a law degree, combined with determination and dedication, will enable me to attain my goals. Although Atticus Finch is a fictional character, I hope to emulate him as a lawyer and use my abilities to help others.
