My interest in economics stems mostly from my passionate conviction to overcome poverty and hunger on a global level. There seems to exist an ever-widening gap between the wealthy and the poor.
Last year, some classmates and I travelled to London to participate in a youth conference on poverty, and that experience heightened my desire to participate in this social struggle.
During a session of the conference, we were given the statistics and background for Tanzania, a country living with drought and severe hunger, and by analysing the yearly budget, inches of rainfall, and other statistics we had to come up with creative solutions for these problems.
This was undoubtedly an exercise in economics. Even water, in Tanzania, forms a kind of currency, so I deemed the drought an economic issue. Through calculation, discussion and brainstorming, our group developed creative suggestions for stretching the country’s very limited resources.
We came to the following conclusion: with the Tanzania population living extreme poverty, while much of the rest of the world’s population is becoming wealthier, this obviously becomes a social and moral issue. However, the matter also becomes an economic concern.
Economics fascinates me because it combines facts and figures with sociological patterns and even ethical and moral questions. The true theoretical nature of the discipline particularly excites me. I enjoy the investigation of the “why” and “how” of money and society as much as simply knowing the facts and figures.
Perhaps the most important benefit, however, would be the new perspective I would gain on everyday events. Looking at things from an economic viewpoint would help me better understand trade, government economic policy and even the sometimes complicated socioeconomic dynamics of modern culture.
My skills and prior successes in these areas have instilled confidence in me that I will make an excellent economist.
Outside of my studies, I swim for the county and play football. This extra-curricular activity contributed to the development of my interpersonal skills, which, along with my academic knowledge and communication, will prove useful as I progress towards my career goals.
All my efforts to explore aspects of economic knowledge have resulted in this course holding an even greater allure for me, and I look forward to taking my understanding to higher levels. I am an ambitious individual, fervently driven by academic achievements and aspirations. I believe that, with training and direction, I will be able to help increase the wealth and welfare of society.
